Solar Irrigation Boosts Year-Round Farming in Northern Ghana as Grow2 Project Concludes
The installation of 25 dry-season mechanised solar irrigation borehole systems across agricultural communities has significantly reduced farmers’ reliance on seasonal rainfall, ensuring year-round vegetable production and improved household incomes across Northern Ghana.
This milestone was highlighted during the closing ceremony of the MEDA GROW2 Project, funded by Global Affairs Canada, at the Modern City Hotel in Tamale.
Speaking on behalf of the Northern Regional Minister, Mr Ali Adolf John, the Mayor of Tamale, Mr Abubakari Adam Takoro, stated that the infrastructure, combined with targeted support for women-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), has strengthened local agricultural value chains and expanded inclusive financing for smallholder farmers.
In addition to irrigation, the initiative provided improved seed varieties, modern processing equipment, and motorised tricycles to streamline the transportation of farm produce to urban market centres.
Mr Takoro noted that these interventions directly complement the Government of Ghana’s agricultural priority initiatives, including the Feed Ghana and Feed the Industry programmes, which aim to increase farm productivity and provide raw materials for domestic industry.
He urged local assemblies, traditional leaders, and savings groups to maintain the infrastructure and business networks established under the project to ensure long-term sustainability and foster continued development partnerships in the region.
