Fisheries Minister Launches Komfueku–Shama Aquaculture Project

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Madam Emelia Arthur has officially launched the Komfueku–Shama Aquaculture Project, a public-private initiative that will convert abandoned clay and quarry pits in the Shama District into operational fish farming sites.

The project is being implemented in partnership with private sector operator R&B Farms and represents a cornerstone intervention under the Government of Ghana’s Blue Economy agenda.

Speaking at the launch ceremony in Komfueku, the Minister said the initiative is a practical demonstration of how innovation can address environmental challenges while delivering tangible economic benefits.

“This is a practical demonstration on how innovation can transform underutilised land into productive economic assets that support food production, create jobs, and strengthen local communities,” she said.

She noted that abandoned quarry and clay extraction pits, which have long posed environmental and safety hazards to surrounding communities, will now serve as structured fish farming sites across the country.

She emphasized that the Komfueku–Shama Aquaculture Project perfectly aligns with core national priorities, including job creation, advancing the government’s 24-hour economy agenda, and driving the Blue Economy development strategy.

Minister Arthur expressed the expectation that, if the model proves successful in the Shama District, it will inform a structured framework for rehabilitating degraded extraction sites into productive agricultural and aquaculture zones across the country.

Delivering a statement on behalf of the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Nelson described the project as a significant milestone for sustainable aquaculture and environmental stewardship in the region.

He expressed confidence that the initiative would serve as a blueprint for other districts across the country.

The District Chief Executive for Shama, Mr. Otis Dentu, assured stakeholders that the Shama District Assembly is fully committed to providing the administrative and structural support required for the smooth execution of the project.

The Director of Operations at R&B Farms, Mr. Benjamin Turkson, addressed stakeholders at the ceremony and underscored the transformative ambition behind the partnership.

“This is a model for rural transformation and environmental rehabilitation,” he said, emphasising that the initiative extends beyond fish production to the broader regeneration of degraded land and rural communities.
