National Peace Council Urges Students to Champion Peaceful Co-Existence
The National Peace Council (NPC), through its Volta Regional Office, has called on students to become ambassadors of peace by embracing dialogue, tolerance and mutual respect to promote peaceful coexistence in their schools and communities.
The call was made during the Council’s “Understanding Conflict and Building Peaceful Co-existence” outreach programme held at Battor Senior High School and Aveyime Senior High Technical School in the Volta Region.
The initiative forms part of the Council’s efforts to strengthen peace education among the youth by equipping students with practical skills in peaceful conflict resolution, effective communication, active listening and peer mediation.
Addressing the students, the Chairman of the Volta Regional Peace Council, Rev. Seth Kwesi Mawutor, encouraged them to embrace diversity, respect one another and regard their differences as strengths rather than sources of division.
He stressed that lasting peace is built through dialogue, tolerance and mutual respect, and urged the students to reject violence and serve as advocates for peace within their schools and the wider society.
At Aveyime Senior High Technical School, discussions focused on the growing incidence of violence among students, including the use of weapons during disputes and the involvement of outsiders in school-related conflicts.
Rev. Mawutor reminded the students that discipline and correction are integral to the educational process and advised them to resolve disagreements through established school procedures instead of resorting to retaliation or violence.
The Regional Executive Secretary of NPC, Dr David Esinu Yao Normanyo, also encouraged the students to communicate openly, exercise self-control and manage their emotions during disagreements.
He noted that forgiveness, respectful dialogue and peaceful problem-solving are essential values for building stronger relationships and creating safe and conducive learning environments.
