Search Ongoing for Missing Fishing Canoe, Seven Crew Members

• 2 MIN READ

The Western Regional Marine Police Command has disclosed that a search operation is ongoing for a missing fishing canoe, Second Chance, and its seven crew members who have not been heard from since departing the Sekondi Fishing Harbour on October 9, 2026.

According to the Command, the owner of the canoe, Nana Kweku Atta, reported at the Fishing Harbour Police Station in Sekondi on October 18, 2026, that the canoe had departed for a fishing expedition offshore Axim but had not returned.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that repeated attempts to contact the crew have been unsuccessful,” the statement read.

The Command said subsequent information suggested that the canoe may have suffered engine failure and drifted towards Tema and the Volta coast. However, its last known position is yet to be confirmed.

It noted that the Western Naval Command, the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), the Fisheries Commission, relevant coastal police stations, chief fishermen and the Eastern Naval Command in Tema have been alerted to assist in the search.

The Police said they are working with the relevant agencies to establish the canoe’s last known position and locate the crew.

“Fishing communities along the coast have also been urged to report any sightings or information about the canoe to the nearest police station,” it concluded.
