COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL ADUKROM PROJECT CAREGIVERS SENSITISED ON RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT
The Information Services Department (ISD) of the Okere District Assembly has sensitised caregivers of the Compassion International Adukrom Project on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2019 (Act 989). The sensitisation programme, held on Friday, 11th July 2026, formed part of the Department’s ongoing public education efforts to promote awareness and effective implementation of the RTI Act within the district. The engagement sought to equip the caregivers with knowledge of their legal right to access information held by public institutions and highlight the importance of credible public information in promoting transparency, accountability and informed community participation.

The Information Officer educated participants on the procedures for requesting information from public institutions and the categories of information that may be accessed under the Act, subject to lawful exemptions. The Officer also emphasised the importance of obtaining information from credible and authorised public sources, particularly when information relates to government policies, programmes and services. Participants were encouraged to use the RTI framework responsibly to obtain information that can help them make informed decisions and better understand development initiatives affecting children, families and communities.

The interactive session provided an opportunity for the caregivers to seek clarification on the practical application of the RTI Act and share their experiences and concerns regarding access to public information. The engagement highlighted the important role of Information Officers as a link between public institutions and citizens by providing guidance on accessing official information and promoting awareness of citizens’ information rights. Improved access to reliable public information can empower caregivers and other community stakeholders to engage constructively with public institutions, monitor services and contribute to addressing development needs within their communities.
The sensitisation concluded with a call for participants to share the knowledge acquired with other caregivers, families and members of their communities. The programme highlighted the importance of the RTI Act as a tool for strengthening transparency, accountability and informed citizen participation, while ensuring that communities have access to information needed to support their development. Through continuous public education and engagement, the Information Services Department continues to contribute to building an informed citizenry and strengthening collaboration between public institutions and communities in the Okere District.
