• 2 MIN READ

The Information Services Department (ISD) of the Okere District Assembly has sensitised students of the Presbyterian Junior High School (JHS), Adukrom-Akuapem, on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2019 (Act 989). The sensitisation programme, held on Wednesday, 22nd July 2026, formed part of ongoing public education efforts to deepen awareness of the right to access information held by public institutions. The engagement sought to introduce the students to their rights under the RTI framework and demonstrate how access to credible public information can promote transparency, accountability and informed participation in community development.

The Information Officer of the Okere District Assembly educated the students on the importance of the RTI Act and the role of Information Officers in facilitating citizens’ access to information. The students were taken through the procedures for requesting information from public institutions and encouraged to rely on credible and verified sources when seeking or sharing information. The Officer explained that access to reliable public information enables citizens to better understand government policies and development programmes, monitor public services and participate meaningfully in decisions that affect their communities.

The sensitisation further emphasised the responsible use of information, particularly among young people who can play an important role in promoting accurate information within their schools, families and communities. An interactive session allowed the students to ask questions, share their understanding of the RTI Act and engage in discussions supported by awareness placards. The engagement highlighted the importance of equipping young citizens with knowledge of their information rights from an early age, enabling them to become informed and responsible participants in community and national development.

The programme forms part of the Information Services Department’s public education activities under the Okere District Assembly to promote awareness and effective implementation of the Right to Information Act within the district. By educating the public and guiding citizens on how to access official information, Information Officers contribute to strengthening the relationship between public institutions and the communities they serve. The sensitisation therefore underscored the role of the RTI Act in promoting openness, accountability and informed citizen participation, while empowering young people to contribute positively to the development of their communities.
