Weija-Gbawe Registry Intensifies Birth Registration Awareness

• 2 MIN READ

The Weija-Gbawe Municipal Births and Deaths Registry has intensified public education on early birth registration, recording 33 new registrations during a sensitisation exercise at Mallam Kokroko Lorry Station.

The exercise formed part of the Registry’s Births and Deaths Celebration Month activities, aimed at encouraging parents and caregivers to register children promptly and understand the importance of official birth records.

Held under the theme, “Every Child Counts: Register Early, Protect Their Future,” the programme featured a public durbar and community sensitisation activities across parts of the municipality.

The Municipal Registrar, Madam Asana Issaka, said birth registration was free for children from birth until they were nine months old. She urged parents and caregivers to take advantage of the service to ensure their children were registered early.

She noted that the awareness campaign also sought to educate residents on the services provided by the Registry and strengthen cooperation with schools, traditional authorities, religious leaders and other stakeholders to improve registration.

Mrs Constance Clera Anane, the officer in charge of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation at the Regional Office, also announced that residents affected by recent floods who had lost their birth certificates could obtain free replacements.

The initiative forms part of the Registry’s efforts to increase birth registration and ensure that children are officially documented from an early age, while improving public access to its services.
